            <description><![CDATA[<p>Students who are volunteering on behalf of Dwight Hall member organizations in good standing may use Dwight Hall's vehicles to pursue service and justice work within CT state boundaries.  To become an eligible driver, you must first attend a mandatory training administered by Yale University's Office of Risk Management:</p>

            <title>2009 Dwight Hall Summer Fellowship Speaker Series</title>

<p><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><span style="font-size:medium;">Reverend Kevin Ewing joined us for part of our day-long orientation to share his experiences with community organizing in the West River area.</span></span></p>
<p><span style="font-family:Verdana;"><span style="font-size:small;"><span style="background-color:rgb(255,255,255);"><span style="color:rgb(128,128,128);"><i><br />
Reverend Kevin Ewing is the president of the West River Neighborhood Services Corporation. He is also the community organizer contracted by Community Foundation for a Greater New Haven to do the on the ground work with the residents in West River, an area with a long history of organizing. It began in 1982 when some George Street resident grew weary of the trucks rumbling past their homes at all hours of the day. They successfully lobbied to have the Rte. 34 traffic rerouted to Legion Avenue. From that success, they continued to work together forming the West River Neighborhood Association in 1986, which finally morphed into the West River Neighborhood Services Corporation (501c3) in 2005. In July of 2000 the Board of Aldermen approved a plan developed by West River residents making it New Havens first and only Neighborhood Revitalization Zone.</i></span></span><br /><br /><span style="font-size:medium;"><b>June 10th</b>:</span><span style="font-size:medium;"><b> Youth Development &amp; Environmental Justice</b><br /><br />
The co-founder and director of Solar Youth Inc., Joanne Scuilli, discussed her organization as well as issues of youth advocacy and environmentalism in New Haven with the Fellows.<br /></span><span style="color:rgb(128,128,128);"><br /><span style="background-color:rgb(255,255,255);"><i>Joanne received her BA from Barnard College, majoring in  Environmental Science. While receiving her Masters from the Yale  School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, she realized she could  pull her three passions - youth, cities and the environment - together  to fill a niche in social and environmental justice work. <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family:Verdana;"> <br /><b>Jennifer Angarita, SM '10, Summer Fellowship Coordinator</b><br /><span style="font-size:small;">Jennifer worked last year with Junta for Progressive Action, Inc. on immigrant rights in the workplace by helping with the development of JUNTAs Worker's Center. Ultimately, the WorkerCenter at JUNTA allows workers affected by abuses such as nonpayment of wages, discrimination, and unsafe working conditions to emerge as core leaders and stakeholders in the much needed responses to those problems. This year Jennifer is working as the summer fellowship coordinator at Dwight Hall and her major responsibilities will include organizing our weekly meetings with community leaders and supporting the fellows work throughout the summer.</span><br /><br /><b>Isabel Chen, SY '10, Integrated Refugee and Immigration Services  (IRIS)</b><br /><span style="font-size:small;">As the Health and Wellness Intern at IRIS, Isabel will be working to  further develop IRIS integrated approach of advocating for patient  care, strengthening relationships with clients as she accompanies  them to their appointments, ensuring that local hospitals and  clinics are capable of conducting pro bono clinical evaluations of  patients, identifying existing programs for refugees, and coordinating her work with local translators. Isabel also aims to establish women's groups within IRIS' programs.</span><br /><br /><b>Joanna Linzer, PC '11, Summer Buds</b><br /><span style="font-size:small;">Joanna is coordinating the Summer Buds program, keeping it in  operation for a fourth successive year.  Joanna will be pairing approximately 35 rising 4th - 6th graders from one of three New Haven public elementary schools with a reading tutor and mentor for  an hour and a ...</span></span></p>]]></description>

            <title>Become a Public School Intern</title>

            <description><![CDATA[<p>Interested in education?  Would you like to become a more involved volunteer in New Haven Public Schools?  We are currently accepting applications for the Dwight Hall Public School Intern Program.<br /><br />
The role of the Dwight Hall Public School Intern (PSI) is to serve as a liaison between a New Haven public school and the Yale community by strengthening current volunteer efforts in the schools and by finding new ways to match resources at Yale with the needs of the school.  Interns might provide the school with individual tutors, professional development for teachers, or special one-time programs to enrich current lessons.  Interns work closely with contacts at the school to discuss the role of Yale volunteers and ways that they may extend and enrich opportunities for New Haven students.<br />

<div>Previous interns have found volunteers fluent in Urdu for elementary school students from Pakistan, arranged performances by an African dance troupe for a middle school African history class, advised the production of a school play, and planned a college application information panel and campus field trip for high school juniors<br />
The internship is a two year commitment, and interns are paid hourly (if work study eligible) or given a stipend at the end of the semester (if non-workstudy).  The requirements of the job include at least four hours of work in the school a week, and mandatory monthly meetings.</div>

Community-based Learning (CBL) is a program that provides students with the opportunity to complete academic projects that address the needs of community nonprofits and government organizations. Organizations identify research, analysis, or evaluation needs and propose them as CBL projects. Projects are matched to Yale courses and students complete them in an academic context with complimenting coursework. The final project meets academic requirements of the students' course while serving as a resource for the organization. <br /><br />
We are currently seeking a new student co-coordinator for Community-Based Learning. This will be the first year that two students will be working as co-coordinators (in place of a single student coordinator). The student coordinators will work with the community, students, administrators and professors to create and facilitate CBL projects, track classes and progress throughout the semester, and work on outreach and evaluation of the program for the future. Spring semester 2009, the new co-coordinator will focus on working with the current coordinator to develop a sustainable program and advocate for the institutionalization of CBL within Yale College. Student coordinators work closely with CBL teaching assistants, supportive faculty, Dwight Hall staff, and Dwight Hall student leadership. <br /><br />

SJN is a resource center, providing the space for dialogue and cooperation, creating and maintaining links to other organizations. <div>Then apply to be an SJN Co-coordinator!  For the coming year, the SJN is looking for qualified applicants to fill two roles - Treasurer and Communications Director.  The treasurer is in charge managing SJN's annual funding, administering SJN stipends and managing the SJN fellowship.  The Communications Director will manage and update SJN's online presence while also keeping all SJN members up to date about upcoming events and opportunities.  Both positions are for the full year, stipended and share other general SJN Co-coordinator responsibilities.</div>

<p><b><br /></b>Initiated in 1968, the <span class="nfakPe">Dwight</span> <span class="nfakPe">Hall</span> <span class="nfakPe">Summer</span> <span class="nfakPe">Fellowship</span> Program is an eight-week, paid program for ten Yale undergraduates who propose projects designed to address community needs. The fellows typically work with established non-profit organizations or civic groups to craft and execute their projects. During the <span class="nfakPe">summer</span> the fellows gather for weekly dinners to meet with community leaders, discuss the broader context of their work, and reflect on the progress of their proposed goals. <br /><br />
