PHILLIPS ACADEMY ANDOVER
COMMUNITY SERVICE TEACHING FELLOWSHIP

BACKGROUND
Phillips Academy, located in Andover, Massachusetts, is an independent, coeducational, diverse, nonsectarian, non-profit boarding and day school offering a variety of academic programs for American and international students in grades 9-12. Student enrollment is approximately 1,105 with a teaching faculty of more than 200 women and men. Founded in 1778, Phillips has a tradition of devotion to democratic ideals and seeks to develop in its students sound personal values as well as scholarship and creativity.

THE TEACHING FELLOW PROGRAM
The Teaching Fellowship introduces recent college graduates to the profession and craft of teaching through immersion in an academic community. In addition to their primary educational responsibilities, Teaching Fellows participate in the residential and co-curricular programs as house counselors and coaches, and frequently are involved in other student activities. Teaching Fellows work with a faculty mentor, participate in a series of Teaching Fellow seminars, and attend departmental and whole faculty meetings. On average, there are twelve Teaching Fellows per year. The Academy provides a stipend of $22,000, medical, dental and life insurance, an apartment in a school dormitory or house, and meals in the dining hall. Fields open to Teaching Fellows include arts and humanities, languages, math and sciences, and Community Service.

THE TEACHING FELLOWSHIP IN COMMUNITY SERVICE
The mission of Phillips Academy's Community Service Program is to develop partnerships between Phillips Academy and local agencies that meet critical needs in the community and provide educational opportunities for students and faculty. Programs in communities throughout the Andover, Lawrence and Boston areas connect Phillips Academy to schools and youth service organizations, elder care facilities, meal kitchens, public health initiatives, political action groups and special needs populations. The Community Service Office works with over thirty agencies, involving over 500 students each trimester. Further, the program serves as a venue for students to explore and develop their skills as leaders and agents of change in the local community and around the globe.

Since its inception in 1994, the Teaching Fellow in Community Service has allowed recent college graduates to play a prominent role in coordinating the operation and evolution of Phillips Academys Community Service program over the course of a one or two-year period. Working closely with the Director and Assistant Director, the Teaching Fellow serves as a facilitator and steward of the programs mission, a key contact with community partners and a mentor to the over 25 student coordinators, as well as the hundreds more who volunteer. The position also provides ample opportunities for further involvement in academics, athletics and extracurricular activities around campus. Teaching Fellows in Community Service go on to be successful leaders in the realms of education, public service, business, social justice and beyond.
