INTRODUCING THE ELM CITY RESIDENT ID CARD
This summer New Haven became the first city to offer a multi-purpose municipal ID card to all New Haven residents, regardless of age or immigration status. Now you have the chance to help make history—with your participation cities like New York, Miami and San Francisco will be encouraged to follow our city’s example.

What does the card do? Lots!
- It works as a debit card in more than 20 businesses in New Haven, including Atticus Bookstore & Café, Bentara Restaurant, Bottega Giuliana, Caffe Adulis, Koffee?, Koffee Too? and The UPS Store
- It’s also an access card to New Haven’s Public Library, beach and golf course;
- It’s a debit card for paying the City’s parking meters;
- And, of course, it’s a useful form of identification for New Haven residents.
A few reasons to get one:
- To demonstrate community solidarity and citizenship—you are also a part of New Haven;
- To stick it to Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly who calls the Elm City Resident ID an “outrageous” policy that “verges on anarchy” for allowing all residents to do such crazy things as visit the library and open a bank account;
- To protest the raids by the Department of Homeland Security on June 7 that led to the arrest of 32 undocumented immigrants;
- ...oh, and it doesn’t hurt that it will serve as a form of valid ID at several bars and clubs.
How do you get one?
All you need to do is join us at Dwight Hall from November 6th to November 9th and bring with you $10 processing fee, plus:
- Proof of Residency:
- If undergraduate student: Yale ID.
- If graduate student: Two items that prove residency (e.g., cell phone bill, bank statement, credit card statement, etc.).
- Legal Form of Photo ID:
- If citizen, one legal form of photo identification (e.g., driver’s license, passport, etc.);
- If foreigner, two legal forms of photo identification (e.g., foreign passport, visa, foreign driver’s license,
